Google maps turns 3D and offline on Android

Google has brought in a novel version of Google maps for Android which has numerous novel features. These include 3D map interaction plus offline reliability features.

Google is now utilizing vector graphics for map so you will not view map load in squares as it has done in the past; instead it will dynamically draw the map as you utilize it. Google lists the below noted features which come with this functionality.

  • Tilting: Drag down with two fingers for tilting the map. Tilt while zoomed in on one of the hundred plus cities across the globe with 3D buildings to view a skyline spring to life.
  • Rotating: Twist with two fingers for rotating the map. After rotating to view 3D building; rotate around them to gain a novel perspective from any direction.
  • Smooth zooming: Slide two fingers together or apart and view map and labels continuously scale to zoom any level; stopping when your fingers stop.
  • Compass mode: Center the map on your location and after that tap the compass button in the top right corner; the map will flip into 3D mode and begin rotating to match your perspective while keeping all the labels upright and as well as readable.

When you talk about the feature of better offline reliability; Google will cache large areas on your device based on where you utilize the map most and they will be available to you even if you lose the connection. It will begin catching the areas you visit the most when your phone is plugged in plus connected to Wi-Fi; so it can do this while you are charging your phone.

We’re already hard at work improving the algorithms and technology behind these features, so over time you can expect to see maps work better in more offline situations,” avows product manager Michael Siliski.

The app also comes with offline rerouting for if you lose connection while utilizing GPS navigation.

Google maps 5.0 works with Android 1.6 plus higher but 3D and offline features need at least 2.0. Google also notes that certain features may not be backed by all devices or countries.

Google; the king of search engines has done it once again by introducing a brand new mobile version of Google Finance for Android and as well as iPhone. It provides with almost same incredible functionality and features as present in the desktop edition.

“Here on the Google Finance team, we’re always looking for new ways to help you access the finance data, charts, and reports that you need in the blink of an eye,” says product manager Brian Shih. “But all the data in the world won’t help if you can’t access it when you need it most. Since many of us are on the run throughout the day and don’t always have our computers in front of us, it came as no surprise that one of users’ most frequently requested features was a fast, easy-to-use mobile website for Google Finance.”
